OTTAWA | Roman Hamrlik won't play for the Washington Capitals on Wednesday night at the Ottawa Senators, sitting out as a healthy scratch. Meanwhile, French-language outlet RDS reported that the Caps were shopping the veteran defenseman.
If they are, it's not because Hamrlik's camp has made a formal request. In an email seeking comment about whether he has requested Washington trade the 37-year-old defenseman, agent Petr Svoboda said: "No we haven't done anything yet."
If the Caps decide to trade him, it could be an acknowledgment from their side that they gave Hamrlik a two-year, $7 million contract in error. He has two goals, eight assists and a plus-1 rating this season, though he's a plus-11 player in 33 games under coach Dale Hunter.
Hamrlik is 19th in the NHL in blocked shots with 119, and his veteran leadership could make him a major draw for teams in need of defensive help on the blue line.
According to the RDS report, Hamrlik would like to be moved.
"Hamrlik has been offered a few teams, but the Capitals are very demanding," RDS reporter Renaud Lavoiewrote, as roughly translated.
