A poll released last month showed that picking Paul Ryan put Wisconsin, Mr. Ryan’s home state, in play for Republicans in this year’s presidential election.

The Democratic-leaning Public Policy Polling firm’s survey, released in mid-July, found that the Wisconsin race became neck-and-neck with a ticket of Mitt Romney and Mr. Ryan trailing President Obama by 47-46. Alone, Mr. Romney trailed Mr. Obama by 6 percentage points.

“Ryan’s presence has the effect of further unifying the GOP base around Romney and also helping to bring some more independent voters into the fold,” the polling firm said at the time.
