A day after President Obama called for new gun restrictions in the wake of the Colorado shooting, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on Thursday ruled out any action this year, saying his chamber was too busy with other issues.
“With the schedule we have, we’re not going to do anything on gun control,” Mr. Reid, Nevada Democrat, told reporters.
On Wednesday, speaking to the National Urban League, Mr. Obama had said he would “leave no stone unturned” in pushing for new controls to try to head off future shootings.
But his party has been reluctant to tangle with Second Amendment supporters over the last decade, and Mr. Reid’s comments signaled that the president’s words are unlikely to translate into concrete action in Congress.
Asked if next year might be more likely if Democrats retain control of the Senate in the elections, Mr. Reid rejected the question: “Nice try.”
