LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Bring back the anthem

What has happened to us? Where has our love of country and one another gone? Are we still E pluribus unum (out of many, one)? It sure doesn’t seem like it.

It looks like at every turn we are being divided — by race, class, economics and politics. I think most are happy to be Americans, but being happy is not the same as being proud and showing it. Yes, we play the national anthem at the start of sporting events, but when we do, only some put their hands over their hearts, and many do not remove their baseball caps or hats.

Why don’t we play the anthem before movie presentations, stage shows, political rallies and all public events? The Virginia Symphony should start every performance with the anthem. If we started this practice, just maybe we could once again become E pluribus unum.
