Katie Ledecky (Bethesda) won her qualifying heat in the 800-meter freestyle, finishing in 8 minutes, 23.84 seconds for the third-fastest time overall. She’ll try to dethrone 2008 gold medalist Rebecca Adlington of Britain in Friday’s final.

Kate Ziegler (Great Falls) finished in 8:37.38 to place 21st in qualifying, missing out on the final.
