Police say a man found dead Sunday morning near the Lincoln Memorial died from a gunshot wound, but no foul play is suspected.
The body was found at about 8 a.m. following multiple calls about a gun shot in the area of West Potomac Park, on the western edge of the National Mall.
U.S. Park Police officers were the first to respond and turned over the investigation to the Metropolitan Police Department.
A spokesman for the department said the death could possibly be a suicide.
The area of Ohio and Independence avenues as well as 23rd Street and Ohio Drive were closed but have now been reopened.
