Unfortunately, Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley and the Democratic legislature are poised to enact into law “same-sex marriage” (“Same-sex marriage bill gets hearing in Md. House,” Web, Friday).
I am not a homophobe. I, along with many others, love unconditionally, and this extends to those in my circle of friends and family who practice homosexuality. I do not deny homosexuals the right to be united in a civil union, but I am strongly against granting them the legal right to “marry,” and here’s why: As Delegate Don H. Dwyer Jr., Anne Arundel County Republican, has testified, homosexual marriage would then be taught in the public schools.
Our children and grandchildren would be taught that there is no distinction between marrying someone of the same sex and marrying someone of the opposite sex. When your Johnny comes home from school one day and tells you he wants to marry Jimmy, how can you tell him it’s not the norm when it’s the law? It will only take a few years of sliding down the slippery slope before the claims of discrimination come to the pastors and churches for teaching that homosexuality is not ordained by God.
We have already seen the recent attacks on religious institutions by the Obama administration and the president’s about-face on the sanctity of marriage legislation in order to please his base in an election year. Conservatism means holding onto the traditions that are good, wholesome and performing well in our society - and abolishing those that are evil, like slavery and abortion.
We have the opportunity to change course in November. If we don’t, we may very well lose the opportunity to ever again be that shining city on a hill.
