After reading Robert Knight’s op-ed about the large number of people registered to vote in multiple states (“Voter fraud in this life and the next,” Monday) I decided to contact the administrator of elections of the Carter County Election Commission in Elizabethton, Tenn., to see whether my husband and I were still registered to vote in Tennessee. We used to live in the state.
I was informed in a reply email that “By Tennessee laws we have to inform the other states when someone has registered in our county so the other county or state can purge them from their records. …”
Wow, what a novel idea: cross-checking. Why doesn’t Maryland adopt a plan like this? It would eliminate multiple-state voter registrations. Just add a place on the Maryland voter registration form for the state of previous registration, then notify that state of the person’s change of residence. Bingo. It gets cleared in the old records and brings an end to multiple registrations. I hope to see this happen soon in Maryland.
