The article “Israel to build homes in West Bank” (Web, June 7) describes how Israel continues to violate both international law and the Fourth Geneva Convention by expanding its settlements in the West Bank. Even the usually subservient U.S. government has accused Israel of hindering peace efforts with the Palestinians by announcing settlement construction.
The United States must back up its words, which Israel routinely ignores, with action. We must end all financial, military and political aid to Israel while demanding an end to Israel’s brutal occupation and oppression of the Palestinians.
Without the $3 billion yearly check we give to Israel, tough-talking Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would be forced to negotiate fairly with the Palestinians. It is everyone’s interests - Israel‘s, the Palestinians’ and the United States’ - that a separate Palestinian state be established based on pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as the capital. This would help to bring much-needed peace to the Middle East and would make our country safer from terrorist threats.
