The United Kingdom's famed city provided the backdrop not only for the latest Olympics but for some classic movies.

With a little British pomp and a lot of British pop, London brought the curtain down on a glorious Olympic Games on Sunday in a spectacular, technicolor pageant of landmarks, lightshows and lots of fun.

A stroll through just about any part of this sprawling city would have one believe that Britons are flushed with hysteria ahead of the Olympic Games that begin next week. But appearances can be deceiving.

In two weeks, if the worst transportation predictions come true, the streets of London will be clogged with hopeless Olympic gridlock, the venerable but tottering subway will be a nightmare of delays, and overcrowding and commuter trains will slow to a crawl.

Europe's tallest building has been officially unveiled in London, but its tenure as the Continent's highest skyscraper will be brief.
